Bulletproof Coffee: The Lowdown

With January comes numerous resolutions and lifestyle overhauls. For those of you who want to enhance your mental and physical performance and make 2015 your best and most productive year yet, say sayonara to your daily cappuccino, it’s time to embrace the Bulletproof coffee revolution.

Consisting of high quality black coffee with a teaspoon of coconut oil or butter mixed in (some enthusiasts add both), this paleo-friendly caffeine fix has been touted as a serious performance enhancer, both mentally and physically.

Fast forward a few years and Bulletproof coffee is consumed by entrepreneurs and athletes the world over. Whilst many of you may think that adding fat to your coffee makes it high in calories and fat (which it does), these are healthy fats and in conjunction with high quality coffee, the body metabolises them in such a way that it helps sharpen focus, aid weight loss whilst also giving a prolonged energy hit whilst also keeping you full.

Healthy fats..butter?! I hear you say. In fact, not all butter is made the same. Grass-fed butter meaning butter made from cows which were fed on a natural diet of fresh grass is much healthier than other butter. Not only will it give you loads of energy, it is also loaded with Vitamin-K2 which helps “de-calcifies arteries,” thus helping with cholesterol levels, debunking the myth that all fats are bad.

Meanwhile, coconut oil is loaded with medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) or medium chain fatty acids which go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are metabolised quickly and turned into so-called ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.  MCTs also increase 24 hour energy expenditure by as much as 5%, potentially leading to significant weight loss in the long term.

Now we’ve got the fats down, it’s important to point out that in order to reap all the wonderful health benefits of this brain-boosting beverage, it is vital to use high quality coffee with a low toxin level as coffee is one of the most highly processed plants on the planet. Choose organic where possible.

Simply brew your coffee as normal and add in a teaspoon (or tablespoon, depending on how adventurous you are feeling) and/or coconut oil. Transfer to a blender if you like foamy coffees and blend for a few minutes. Voila!
